Closet Porn ;)

Have I mentioned that my fabulous, amazing, fancy schmancy master closet is done?  As in, it is built, primed, painted, and finished?  As in, I don't have to spend hours ever again scraping paint off of my hair and out from under my fingernails?  As in, my husband doesn't dread seeing me coming through the house, because NO MORE DO I HAVE TO ASK WHEN IS HE DONE BUILDING THAT DANG CLOSET?  Not that that ever happened.  NEVER.

Before I show you pictures of the completed closet, let's take a stroll, er, marathon sprint down memory lane realquicklikethis.

Once upon a time, there was a little home in Memphis.  Two lovebirds, the Knight and AFS, stumbled upon the home while looking to purchase their first house.  From the outside, they thought it quite ugly.  So Orange, she said.  So many repairs that need to be made, he said.

As the young lovers completed the tour of the interior of the home, they were quite pleased.  So spacious, she said.  Repairs that I can make myself, he said.

They wandered through the home, stopping in the master bedroom.  Our furniture will fit nicely in here, she said.  The floors have been refinished, he said.

Then, they ventured into the master closet.  It was empty.  No clothing rods.  No shelves.  No nothing.  But they were not displeased.  I can make this a dream closet for her, he said.  I can fit all my clothes in here, she said.

And, so, the young lovers bought the house.

For months, the closet space remained empty - a 5 foot by 10 foot space.  A blank canvas.  It looked like this:

AFS drew the Knight a picture of what she dreamed (shoe trays, sweater boxes, and lots and lots of hanging space.  Oh, and a bench, too?  Possibly a place to put her dirty garments?).

The brave Knight took his wife's wishes, and went on a long and arduous journey trying to please her.  Rumor has it that she was the most demanding woman in the South.  I told you he was brave.

The Knight began measuring, and sawing, and hammering, and nailing all kinds of wood together.  Sometimes, he worked in the rain.  Sometimes, in the cold.  Sometimes, he tracked sawdust all through the house, but AFS held her tongue.  She knew the end result would be worth all the sneezing.  All the vacuuming.

The Knight worked very hard, but the end result was oh so pretty.

After the Knight finished his great feat, AFS was completely won over.  She promised to stay with him forever, as long as she could keep the closet.  The Knight agreed to let her keep the closet.  He promised to never take it away, and that his clothes would never dare cross the threshold into her lovely closet land.  In exchange for his promise, AFS promised to paint and finish out the closet.  It was the best deal she ever made.

After priming the thirsty wood, AFS and her friends applied three coats of glossy white paint to the huge closet.  AFS started to regret the intricacy of her closet drawing.  Had she really needed quite that many shoe trays?  Sweater boxes?  But she couldn't help but be proud at how carefully and closely the Knight captured her dream.

Finally, the painting was done, and the exciting moment arrived.  The clothes can come in!  The shoes can come in!  AFS moved all of her clothes from the other 3 closets in the house to the master one.

Then, she took every single pair of shoes she owned out of their boxes and set them in the floor.

Oh, those pretty shoes!  The shoes alone made her heart swell.

She carefully arranged all of her clothes and shoes by color.  Voila! Her closet made her so happy, she felt like she was sinning.

For the first time in years, all of her clothes were in the same room at the same time.  None are in boxes.  None are in the attic. Arranging by color from light to dark is one of her personal great pleasures.  Having a color and sleeve organized closet gives her such a sense of order.  It is luscious, she tells everyone.

The entire project took approximately 4-5 months.  With the holidays and jobs and life, it just took a long time to finish everything.  But the Knight and AFS decided that the time and effort was worth it.

Do you agree?

Sigh.  She is a happy diva today.

Aw, thanks everyone! I told the Knight about how all the girls were complimenting him, and he got a little embarrassed. Secretly, though, I think he was quite pleased with himself!
